Who is Thor Winston?
Ice Grooves premier artist, 22 year-old singer/songwriter Thor Winston was blessed with the ability to visualize and create his music on an emotional level. Born and raised for a small period in Springfield, Ohio, hometown of John Legend, Thor’s family relocated to Columbus, Ohio where he began to experiment and explore his musical gifts. After recording his cathartic and catchy tune Thinking ’bout U he gained the attention of the underground Columbus R&B scene, ranking #1 on many indie music sites such as reverbnation.com and attracting over 80,000 mp3 plays and friends on myspace.
As a student at the Ohio State University Thor studied psychology, where he met and collaborated with many underground rappers and singers. As he studied psychology however, he began to understand the power and gift of his lyrics to people’s emotions. “I started noticing how people would react to some of my songs, I mean, it sounds cheesy, but some girls would just start crying because the words would remind them of a relationship or maybe touch them in a way most songs these days don’t.”
In June 2009, driven by the momentum of his fans, Thor went to Nashville to record an EP album with an old classmate from high school Ryan Parks. Ryan, who was interested in Thor’s unique blend of R&B, asked if he would be interested in recording some songs professionally in Nashville, Tennessee one of the recording capitols of the world. Ryan worked as a sound engineer and helped Thor transition into the professional recording atmosphere. “It was really advantageous that Ryan asked me to come down to the studio when he did because it was around that time that I was debating whether or not music could be more than a hobby for me.”
The self titled E.P. album launched on iTunes and several mom & pop record stores around Columbus on December 18th 2009 along side the Thinking ’bout U music video which aired on local television channels. To date the E.P. album has generated over 1,000 downloads.
Thor’s underground success shows the potential his lyrics and voice possess. “I live by the ideal if you want something you have never had you must do something you have never done. Which leads me to push and create my music in a sincere way that I know most people will appreciate.”
